What deck problems do we repair?

Why do Austin decks fail the way they do?
Central Texas is hard on decks in a specific order. The sun does the most damage: months of intense UV dries boards out, opens cracks, and cooks the finish off the surface. Then the rain arrives in bursts, and water gets into every crack the sun opened. Boards swell, fasteners work loose, and untreated cut ends start to rot. Add the daily expansion and contraction of hot summers, and connections that were tight five years ago aren’t anymore.

Do you repair composite decks?
Yes. We repair composite decking, including Trex and TimberTech boards, along with every common wood species. Composite repairs are their own discipline: boards are replaced rather than patched, color matching against a weathered field takes real care, and the hidden fastener systems have to come apart and go back together correctly.
When is repair the wrong call?
We’ll tell you when it is. If the frame is failing in multiple places, if posts have rotted at the base, or if the ledger connection to the house can’t be trusted, patching the surface wastes your money and leaves the real risk in place. At that point the honest answer is a full deck replacement, and we’ll show you exactly what we found so the decision is yours, made with the facts.
One thing many homeowners don’t expect: structural rebuild work can require a permit. The City of Austin only exempts a deck from permitting when it’s under 200 square feet, sits no more than 30 inches above grade at any point, isn’t attached to the house, and doesn’t serve as an exit path from the home (source: City of Austin, Work Exempt from Building Permits). Most attached residential decks don’t meet that exemption, so when a repair turns structural, permitting is part of doing it right. We handle that process as part of the job.

If boards flex noticeably, a railing moves when you lean on it, or any post looks shifted or soft at the base, keep people off that area until it’s been looked at. Those symptoms sometimes mean frame problems, and that’s not a risk worth testing at a barbecue.
Will you tell me if I don't need a repair?
Yes. If what you’re seeing is cosmetic and harmless, we’ll say so. An honest no is cheaper for you and better for us than an invented job.
