What makes a pool deck different?
Water, permanently. Every other deck sheds rain a few dozen days a year; a pool deck’s splashed, dripped on, and walked on wet all season. That changes everything underneath the surface: drainage has to carry water away from both the pool and the house, fasteners and hardware need to live with constant moisture, and the structure gets detailed like it’s outdoors even by deck standards.
It changes the surface too, and that’s where most pool decks go wrong. The boards need to be comfortable barefoot in August, reasonably forgiving when wet, and finished or chosen so pool chemicals and sun don’t chew through them. A standard deck built next to a pool becomes a maintenance problem on a schedule; a pool deck is built expecting the water.
What's the best material around a pool?
Composite has the strongest case, and around pools specifically the fully synthetic capped polymer boards shine: no wood content to drink up water, nothing for the moisture to rot, and cleaning is a hose. Lighter colors matter double here, for heat underfoot and because pool decks live in full sun almost by definition. The composite decking options are covered in depth on their own page.
Wood absolutely works too, chosen and finished for the job: species that handle moisture, sealed properly, and resealed on the schedule a pool deck’s exposure demands. It costs less up front and asks more attention in return, same trade as everywhere, just amplified by the water.
Building the deck with a new pool, or around an existing one?
Both are normal jobs; the sequencing differs. With a new pool, the deck gets planned alongside the pool build and we coordinate timing with your pool contractor so neither trade wrecks the other’s work. Around an existing pool, we design to what’s there: coping height, equipment access, drainage patterns that already exist, and the paths people actually walk. Either way, the deck ends where it should and drains where it must.

How does a pool deck project run?
The same way as any build through our custom deck builds process: site visit, design decisions, written proposal, permits when required, construction, and a walkthrough. The pool adds coordination, not chaos: equipment stays reachable, safety clearances get respected, and the deck is planned around how people move between water, towels, and the back door.

Frequently asked questions
Won't a wood or composite deck be slippery around a pool?
Wet is wet, but board choice and texture matter a lot. Modern composite lines carry textured surfaces made for exactly this, and wood can be finished with grip in mind. It’s a design input we handle, not an afterthought.
How hot does a pool deck get in the sun?
Hot enough that color choice is a comfort decision, not a style one. Lighter boards run noticeably cooler underfoot, and we’ll tell you honestly how each option you’re considering behaves in full Texas sun.
Do you build concrete pool decks or pavers?
No. We build wood and composite decks. If what you want around the pool is poured concrete or pavers, we’re not the right crew, and we’ll tell you that in the first phone call rather than waste your site visit.
Can you replace the deck around our existing pool?
Yes. Tear-out and rebuild around an existing pool is a normal project; we protect the pool and its equipment during demolition and build the new deck to the water that’s already there.
